China Railway’s official 12306 English website supports valid foreign passports. The difficult part is usually not the train—it is identity matching, choosing the correct city station and arriving with enough time for a large terminal.
Book with exact passport data
Enter name, nationality, passport number and date information exactly as required. Do not casually change spacing or name order between bookings. Use the original valid passport for travel; an itinerary sheet or reimbursement receipt is not a ticket.
Choose the station, not only the city
Chongqing and Chengdu each have multiple stations. Chongqing North, Chongqing West, Shapingba, Chengdu East and other terminals are not interchangeable. Check the full station name, Chinese characters, departure time and transfer distance from your hotel.
On travel day
- Arrive early enough for security, passport inspection and a long walk to the gate.
- Keep the passport and booking number accessible.
- Check the electronic board because platform/gate information can update.
- Pack liquids, tools and restricted items according to current railway-security rules.
- Keep children and luggage together during boarding.
Changes and refunds
The official English service offers purchase, endorsement/change and refund functions within its operating rules. Fees, cut-offs and seat availability vary. Use the original booking channel and do not assume a missed train can be freely transferred.
Our Chongqing–Chengdu journey deliberately keeps the rail day lighter so station logistics do not collide with a major attraction.
Use the passport as the key to the entire rail journey
China Railway’s official English service accepts valid foreign passports, but the booking works only when the passenger details match the travel document. Enter the family name, given names, nationality, date of birth and passport number in the format required by the system. Review every character before payment, because a small error can interfere with identity verification, refund processing or boarding.
Carry the original passport used to buy the ticket. A booking screenshot, payment receipt or itinerary sheet is useful evidence but is not a substitute for the identity document that controls travel. If the passport is renewed after booking, contact the original booking channel or China Railway for the correct process rather than assuming the old number will be accepted at the gate.
Choose the official channel or understand the third-party trade-off
The official 12306 website and app provide the operating railway’s inventory and rules. A third-party agency may offer a more familiar interface, foreign-card support or customer service, but can add fees and its own change or refund workflow. Before paying, identify who issued the ticket, who will support a schedule change and whether the quoted fare includes a service charge.
Use the official domain or verified application-store listing. Search advertising and similarly named apps can mislead travellers. Never give a 12306 password, card code or remote access to someone who promises to secure a sold-out train. During national holidays and major events, availability is genuinely constrained; a payment request outside a recognised platform does not create inventory.
Select the station before selecting the departure time
Chongqing and Chengdu each have multiple passenger stations, and a city name in conversation is not enough. Chongqing North, Chongqing West and other stations are far apart in a large, vertical municipality; Chengdu East and other terminals serve different routes. Confirm the full station name in Chinese and English before booking and estimate travel time from the actual hotel entrance.
A slightly later train from the correct station can be safer than an earlier departure requiring a long cross-city transfer. Check arrival station as carefully as departure station, especially when a guide, driver or hotel transfer will meet the traveller. Share the train number, date, station and planned exit, not only a screenshot cropped around the departure time.
Understand seat classes and passenger needs
High-speed trains commonly offer second, first and business classes, while other services use different seating or sleeper categories. The cheapest suitable class is often comfortable for Chongqing–Chengdu, but travellers should consider luggage, mobility, children and the need to sit together. Availability and carriage layout vary by train.
Passenger names must be entered separately and seating together is not guaranteed merely because tickets were purchased in one session. Review the booking result immediately. If a child travels, use the current official passenger and ticket rules rather than copying an age-based statement from an old blog, because identity and fare requirements can change.
Plan the station as part of the journey
Large Chinese stations operate with airport-like security and controlled departure areas. Arrive with enough time for the journey to the terminal, security, passport checks, finding the waiting area and walking to the gate. The correct margin depends on station size, holiday crowds, luggage and mobility; a first-time visitor should not plan around the last possible entry minute.
Keep the passport accessible but secure, and check the electronic boards because gate information can update. Listen for the train number rather than relying on an English destination announcement. Boarding usually begins before departure and closes according to station operations. If uncertain, show the train number and passport to uniformed staff.
Luggage, food and battery preparation
Bring luggage that one person can control through escalators, lifts, security and a moving train. Storage is shared and can fill, so avoid arriving with an oversized case that cannot be safely placed. Keep medicines, passport, valuables and one layer of clothing in the smaller bag that stays with you.
Current railway rules govern restricted items, liquids and portable batteries. Check the official notice before packing rather than relying on airline assumptions. Bring water and food suitable for the journey where permitted, but do not create strong odours or block shared space. Dispose of waste in the train bins and respect quiet-car rules where applicable.
Changes, refunds and missed trains
Changes and refunds depend on timing, ticket type, availability and the original channel. Use the account or agency that issued the ticket and read the fee before confirming. Do not assume a missed departure can be transferred without cost or that the next train has seats. If disruption occurs, keep the passport and booking number ready and ask official station staff for the available options.
When the railway changes or cancels a service, follow the official notice and original payment channel. Be cautious of unsolicited refund messages containing links or QR codes. A genuine refund does not require giving a stranger a one-time banking code or installing screen-sharing software.
A calm Chongqing–Chengdu rail day
Keep the transfer day light. Check out with enough time, confirm the station name with the hotel, use a transport route that accounts for traffic and building elevation, and plan one flexible activity after arrival rather than a timed major attraction. Save both hotels in Chinese and test the arrival transport plan before boarding.
- Passenger details exactly match the original passport.
- Departure and arrival stations are confirmed, not only city names.
- Ticket issuer, support channel and refund terms are known.
- Passport and booking number are accessible offline.
- Luggage and batteries comply with current railway rules.
- The arrival hotel address and late-check-in contact are saved in Chinese.
For travellers with reduced mobility or substantial luggage, ask the station or railway about current assistance rather than assuming every lift, gate or transfer can be navigated independently. Build extra time into both ends of the journey and keep essential support information in Chinese. Accessibility features and booking procedures vary by station and should be verified for the actual train and date.
