Entry & arrival

China entry and arrival guidance for foreign visitors

Resolve lawful entry, immigration documents and accommodation registration before small practical questions consume the trip.

The useful answer first

What should a first-time visitor do?

Start with the passport you will actually carry and one current official policy. Save onward travel and Chinese accommodation details offline. After entry, make sure the hotel completes registration or confirm the local process for a private address. Visa-free entry, transit, visa validity and permitted stay are separate questions and should not be blended.

Keep these four items ready

  • Passport, purpose, route, permitted stay and effective dates.
  • Chinese hotel name, address, phone and booking record.
  • Arrival terminal, onward transport and a fallback meeting plan.
  • NIA or embassy source checked again before departure.

Common mistakes to avoid

Do not treat a social post, airline summary or last year’s trip as the governing rule. The passport used, purpose of visit, point of entry, onward route and permitted duration can change the answer. A visa-free traveller can still be refused if the trip does not fit the policy or the supporting information is incomplete.

A practical order of action

First identify the entry policy and permitted stay. Second save evidence for the route and accommodation. Third prepare arrival transport and registration. Finally recheck the official source shortly before departure and keep the relevant page or screenshot offline.

Make the decision at the correct level

Treat admission, airline boarding, hotel registration and lawful stay as separate controls. An official immigration source supports the entry rule, the operating airline decides its document check and the hotel or local public-security process handles accommodation. When the facts are uncertain, send the exact passport, purpose, dates and route to the responsible authority instead of asking whether “foreigners” generally need a visa.

Where paid support begins and ends

Paid support can organise the questions, airport or station meeting, Chinese addresses and first-day sequence. It cannot issue a visa, decide border admission or conceal an activity outside the permitted purpose. Any licensed travel component and the entity receiving payment must be identified before contract.
