Do not plan from a screenshot of a country list. China uses several different visa-exemption frameworks, including bilateral or unilateral arrangements and visa-free transit. The conditions are not interchangeable. Confirm your passport, travel document, purpose, route and exact dates on the National Immigration Administration (NIA) or the Chinese embassy responsible for you.
First identify which policy you are using
A visa-free stay based on nationality is different from 240-hour visa-free transit. Transit normally requires travel onward to a third country or region and use of eligible ports and permitted areas. A return trip from Country A to China and straight back to Country A may not satisfy a third-destination transit condition even when the traveller’s nationality appears on a transit list.
Seven details to verify
- Passport nationality and whether an ordinary passport is required.
- Passport validity and blank-page expectations used by the airline or authorities.
- Permitted purpose: tourism, business, family visit, exchange or transit are not always treated identically.
- Maximum stay and how the stay is calculated.
- Policy start and end dates.
- Arrival port, departure port and permitted travel area.
- Evidence of accommodation, itinerary, funds and onward or return travel that may be requested.
Current transit information changes
The NIA’s July 2025 English interpretation describes a 240-hour visa-free transit policy for eligible nationals using designated ports and travelling onward to a third country or region. Because eligible nationalities, ports and areas can change, this page deliberately does not reproduce a permanent master list. Use the live NIA page when planning.
Visa-free does not mean document-free
Carry the passport used for booking, accommodation details in English and Chinese, onward or return tickets and a simple itinerary. Airline boarding checks and immigration admission are separate decisions. No travel consultant can guarantee admission.
If the facts are unclear, contact the Chinese embassy or the NIA 12367 immigration service before travel. Our arrival and accommodation registration guide explains what happens after entry.
Build a passport-specific decision, not a generic country-list answer
A useful visa-free check begins with the exact travel document in your hand. Ordinary, diplomatic, service and temporary passports can be treated differently, and a right attached to one nationality does not automatically apply to a dual national using another passport. Match the spelling and document number used for flights, accommodation and any attraction reservation. If you renew a passport between booking and departure, update every booking that depends on the old document and re-check the entry basis.
Then separate permission to enter from permission to do a particular activity. Tourism, business meetings, family visits, exchange and transit may appear in policy descriptions, but paid work, journalism, study or other regulated activity can require a different visa even when the traveller could otherwise enter visa-free. Describe the real purpose when asking an embassy or the National Immigration Administration for guidance. A vague question produces an answer that may not fit the trip.
Calculate the stay with dates you can show
Write an arrival-to-departure calendar before paying for non-refundable hotels. Record the scheduled entry date, scheduled exit date, any overnight transport and the policy maximum shown by the current official source. Do not assume that a marketing phrase such as “30 days” means the same calculation under every exemption. If the itinerary approaches the maximum, obtain passport-specific confirmation and leave a sensible margin for cancelled trains, weather or illness.
Keep evidence of the intended stay in a simple offline folder: confirmed accommodation, return or onward transport, contact details and a short itinerary. Immigration officers may ask practical questions even where advance visa application is not required. The objective is not to carry a large dossier; it is to show that the purpose, route and departure plan are coherent. A flexible booking should still have a real address for the first night.
Understand why visa-free transit is a route problem
Visa-free transit is frequently misunderstood because eligibility is not decided by nationality alone. The arrival point, departure point, onward destination, permitted administrative area and length of stay must fit the live policy together. A route from Country A to mainland China and straight back to Country A may fail a third-country-or-region requirement even if a traveller saw their nationality on an eligible list. A route involving Hong Kong or Macao should be checked against the official definition rather than guessed from a map.
Draw the route as three points: where the traveller arrives from, the mainland China port used, and where the traveller goes next. Then check the carrier and every connection. Separate tickets can create additional airline-document checks, and an airport transit area does not solve a route that is ineligible under the policy. If the route is complicated, send the complete sequence and passport details to the appropriate official channel before booking.
Airline boarding and Chinese admission are separate controls
An airline assesses whether it is prepared to carry a passenger under its document-check system and liability rules. Chinese immigration authorities decide admission at the border. A traveller can therefore face questions at check-in even after reading an official immigration page, and no hotel, guide or travel consultant can override either decision. Carry the official page or embassy reply offline, but remain prepared to explain the route calmly.
Names are a common source of avoidable friction. Enter surname, given names, spacing and document number exactly as the booking system requires. If the passport has a single name, multiple surnames or a machine-readable-zone format that differs from normal use, confirm how the airline and railway systems expect it. Do not invent a placeholder without asking the relevant operator.
What to do when the official answer is unclear
Use a short escalation order. First read the current National Immigration Administration page that describes the applicable exemption. Second check the Chinese embassy or consulate responsible for the traveller’s location and passport. Third, for an operational immigration question, use the NIA 12367 service. For boarding, ask the operating airline and provide the exact itinerary. Save the date, URL and response instead of relying on a cropped screenshot forwarded in a chat.
Policies can change between planning and departure, so repeat the check before the free-cancellation deadline and again shortly before travel. Kakagogo can organise the questions, itinerary and official links, but it does not issue visas, decide admission or promise that a traveller qualifies. If visa-free eligibility remains uncertain, the conservative option is to obtain the appropriate visa before non-refundable commitments.
A final pre-flight file for Southwest China
For a Chongqing or Chengdu trip, save the first hotel name, address and telephone number in both English and Chinese; arrival flight or train details; onward or return ticket; a day-by-day city outline; and the contact of the person meeting you, if any. Keep the file on the phone and as a shareable PDF, and give a copy to a travelling companion. This same information will also help with transport, accommodation registration and emergency communication after arrival.
Re-check any side trip that changes the entry sequence. Hong Kong, Macao and international cruise or flight connections can change which movement counts as entry or onward travel. Do not let an attractive multi-city fare silently alter the legal route that was originally checked. The right question is always: does this passport, purpose, route and date range fit the current official rule?
