Money and payments in China for first-time visitors

Build several payment paths instead of betting the first meal or taxi on one app.

The useful answer first

What should a first-time visitor do?

Official guidance recognises mobile payment, bank cards and RMB cash. Mobile wallets are valuable for everyday QR payments; international cards work at some hotels and larger merchants; cash remains a resilient backup. Verification, limits and acceptance can change by platform, card issuer and merchant, so test a small transaction while another option is available.

Keep these four items ready

  • Official mobile-wallet app and an eligible overseas card.
  • Physical card with international use enabled.
  • RMB cash obtained through an authorised channel.
  • Second card or emergency fund stored separately.

Common mistakes to avoid

Do not assume that linking a card means every QR code will accept it, or that one successful hotel payment proves a street vendor will work. Avoid exchanging money through informal channels, and never let a stranger operate a wallet or verification screen. Payment resilience comes from independent methods, not several cards inside one unavailable phone.

A practical order of action

Before departure, notify the card issuer and install only official wallet apps. On arrival, obtain a modest RMB cash reserve, test a small wallet payment and keep a physical card accessible. Record issuer and wallet support numbers somewhere that does not depend on the same device.

Make the decision at the correct level

Choose the setup by failure consequence. A wallet is excellent for daily QR payments, a physical card supports hotels and larger merchants, and RMB cash protects a taxi or meal when the network or account fails. Two cards inside the same locked wallet are not two independent backups. Test each method while another path and a trusted location are available.

Where paid support begins and ends

Kakagogo can explain official setup, translate a merchant or help locate an authorised bank or ATM. It cannot guarantee a bank, card issuer, platform or merchant approval and will never ask for a one-time code. Payment recipients for travel services must match the written contract or be verified through a known channel.
