Set up data first, then payment, transport, maps, translation and messaging—with offline copies of what cannot fail.
The useful answer first
Roaming is simple, a travel eSIM can be installed before arrival on compatible devices, and a passport-registered local SIM can provide a Chinese number. No option is automatically best. Choose by phone compatibility, trip length, local-number needs and cost, then save hotel addresses, tickets and emergency contacts outside the app ecosystem.
A data plan does not guarantee that every familiar overseas service will behave as it does at home. Do not install unknown “helper” apps or buy unverified SIM profiles from private messages. Check whether the phone is carrier-locked, whether dual-SIM settings may disable the home number and whether account recovery sends codes to an inaccessible line.
Confirm handset compatibility first. Install or arrange the chosen data method before it becomes urgent, then test maps, translation, messaging and payment. Download Chinese addresses, ticket files and emergency contacts, and keep enough battery for identity checks and transport changes.
Roaming prioritises simplicity, a travel eSIM can prioritise pre-arrival setup and a local SIM can provide a Chinese number. Device lock, supported bands, dual-SIM behaviour and SMS needs change the answer. App availability also varies by network and current regulation, so no provider should promise that the phone will behave exactly as it does at home.
Arrival support can help test lawful connectivity, maps, messaging and payments after check-in. Kakagogo does not sell, configure or guarantee circumvention tools. Keep account recovery, passport and payment information under your control and install apps only from the verified publisher.
